about
Antifreeze sounds like the Backstreet Boys, Iggy pop, and Timbaland got in the studio together. It starts out with this really dark, mysterious vibe. A very odd vocal sample from Alex P which I mutated and flipped around, an unusual sample from a 60s organ called the Optigan which somehow produced sound using light discs, and some backwards percussion
To me, it sounds like a frozen desert at night. All the different sounds come together. Alex’s sample gives it a desert flavor, the organ plays notes that sound like a desert, the darkness makes it sound like night, and the breaths sound like the way your icy breath lingers in the winter
Then the prechorus kinda breaks into that atmosphere, lasts for about a second and then the song explodes into a heavily harmonized boy band chorus with the catchiest melody you’ll hear til my next song. There’s this really jungle-sounding drum fill I cobbled together the 11th hour because I knew something was missing and a house-inspired bassline that helps pump up the energy. I dare you to listen to this twice and not get it stuck in your head.
The chorus ends, it dissolves back into a dark verse but this time things have warmed up a little bit. I’m singing really low background vocals and talking about being at the beach as winter turns to spring while samples of seagulls and divers plunging into water flit in and out. Ang Mo Kui provided some really cool, textural synth organ and guitar. I put some surfy guitar in the distance. But here, I really focused the production on the vocals, the drums, and the synth Then the pre-chorus interrupts everything thoughtlessly and we crash back into the chorus
The bridge is mostly vocal with a little organ and a tiny bit or horn and guitar you can hear if you listen really closely. Then we’re back to the chorus but this time I’m singing in a different key, almost screaming like a Nirvana or Alice in Chains song. It’s a lot more intense but intense in an almost happy way. I’m also reversing the chord progression of the chorus, where the first two times it was a happier chord progression that went to a sadder one and then back to the verse, this time it’s the sadder chord progression going back into the happier one because I wanted to end this song with that kind of ring to it.
lyrics
Winter hits the house. Rolling down my mouth
Pour on antifreeze. Like a summer breeze rolling into town
Winter hits the state. Frozen lakes and graves
Pour on antifreeze. Summer hits the sea. Rain keeps pouring down
What do I think I’m doing?
When I freeze up, when I seize up,
When I feel like I can’t breathe
I need antifreeze. Yup
When I freeze up, when I seize up,
When I feel like I’m not free
I need antifreeze, yup
Yup yup yup yup
Winter hits the world. Frozen boys and girls
Pour on antifreeze. Now you’re at the beach
Dive into the surf
Winter hits my life. And it’s your eyes
Pour on antifreeze. Now you’ll run with me
Run and laugh and cry
What do I think I’m doing?
When I freeze up, when I seize up,
When I feel like I can’t breathe
I need antifreeze. Yup
When I freeze up, when I seize up,
When I feel like I’m not me
I need antifreeze, yup
Yup yup yup yup
When I freeze up, when I seize up,
When I feel like I can’t be
I need antifreeze. Yup
When I freeze up, when I seize up,
When I feel like I’m not free
I need antifreeze, yup
Yup yup yup yup
